Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)

Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) regulations has been set by the government to have a uniform and understandably strict code for the Ayurvedic drug manufacturers. The production must happen in highly hygienic conditions and the product must be safe for consumption; these are the most important factors that have been stated.

The Ayurveda texts have also stated stringent norms for setting up a pharmacy.

  • The place should be clean, devoid of dirt and dust.
  • There must be sufficient natural light.
  • There should be enough ventilation of air.
  • There should not be moisture and darkness in the place.
  • The pharmacy should not be in close vicinity of ant hills or serpents.
  • It should not be in close quarters to a funeral place.

These are some of the measures stated in the texts. These are very relevant even after 2500 years since they were first conceived.

Besides, the quality control of the finished products has been well explained in the texts. There are standard tests stated to be undertaken on the drugs to check if they meet the standards of quality. Those that do not meet the standards are reworked in the production process and tested again.
